Historical Note
In 1218, the descendants of Geoffrey de Mandeville granted the Digswell Estate to a William de St Michael, son of Benedict, to pay debts owed to him, after which four generations of St Michael lived in Digswell.
However, the Mandevilles remained ‘overlords in chief ’ of the estate until it passed to Henry de Bohun, Earl of Hertford, upon his marriage to Maud de Mandeville. After his daughter Mary de Bohun married Henry IV the estate temporarily became Crown Property under Henry V.
