Historical Note
The third generation of St Michaels at Digswell was headed by Lawrence de St Michael, who became a Knight of the Realm to comply with Edward I’s decree that all owners of land worth £20 or more should be knighted.

Five centuries later, in 1786, ownership passed to Lord Cowper of Panshanger, who let Digswell Lodge out to tenant farmers.
